Shiva eye - shell lid (operculum)

Shiva eye - shell lid (operculum)

The Shiva eye is the so-called operculum - protective door or shell lid -

of the turban snail or top shell. When the animal dies, the stone detaches and is released.

The special feature of these 'protective doors' is their richness of color, as well as the swirl on the reverse side.

In up to 20 work steps, the Shiva eye is processed into gemstones. The special structure of this

aragonite variety is similar to that of pearls. The different colorations are caused by the various algae particles that the cone snail consumed during its

lifetime. These can range from red, brown, yellow, orange

and green to rare turquoise-blue. In other countries, the Shiva eye is also known under other names.

A few examples are: Shiva Eye, Buddha Eye, Cat's Eye, Money of mermaids and many more.

These shell lids are approx. 3 - 3.5 cm in size.

Origin: Madagascar
