Rainbow obsidian
Rainbow obsidian has very sharp edges at freshly broken spots, and only there does it reveal its differently colored layers.
From the outside, the nodular pieces are often dull, and the typical colors are not visible. These only appear along the correct cleavage direction or when the stones are viewed wet in sunlight!
They must first be broken/cut to reveal the play of color! Best viewed in sunlight!
Obsidian forms when lava rock solidifies under very special conditions.
Because of its extremely sharp fracture surfaces, obsidian was and is used for making tools.
Still popular today among flintknappers.
Some pieces may occasionally be somewhat larger or smaller!
